Many members of staff balance teaching time with continued professional practice as translators, interpreters, practitioner psychologists, tax and finance specialists, and management consultants. Enhance your professional and technical skills or extend your knowledge and understanding of a subject. They help us understand and quantify what is happening in society and the economy, and provide the methods and tools to help researchers of all kinds collect, analyse and interpret data. Regional Studies is interdisciplinary and concerns with the analysis of sub-national regions and regional issues. It seeks to understand how economic and political processes are influenced by regional and local circumstances and vice versa. Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and how it influences our behaviour, from communication and memory to thought and emotion. It is both an academic discipline and a vital clinical practice, examining human behaviour, thoughts and feelings through observation, measurement, and testing.

Careers in Social Sciences

Competition for places varies from year to year and you aren't guaranteed a place if you meet the minimum qualifications. You'll have the opportunity to learn about social scientific research on a range of subjects including Scottish cultural identity, environmental politics, social inequalities, the sociology of organisations and social change. You'll also learn about doing research and carry out your own research projects. We offer a strong and sustainable research environment that nurtures and supports world leading research, productive and exciting collaborations, and develops risk-taking academic research leaders. Our research is relevant to the wider world, and we develop its impact through partnerships with community organisations, festivals, museums and the general public.

Everything we do in the School of Social Sciences has a truly global outlook. Many of our programmes are delivered across Heriot-Watt’s three main campuses in Edinburgh, Dubai and Malaysia, offering students the opportunity to transfer between Heriot-Watt's global campuses for one semester or more. We have collaborative partnerships with leading business and language schools all over the world including student exchange programmes with universities in North America, China, Europe and Australia.

Learn about crime, criminal behaviour and punishment, visit criminal courts and prisons and take advantage of volunteering opportunities and an optional placement in a relevant organisation. Develop analytical and practical skills in both quantitative and qualitative research, often needed for further academic study and highly sought after by employers. Hong Kongese qualifications

This information is a guide and all students applying with Open University Credits will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We will consider your application carefully and take note of any previous qualifications or relevant work experience. The first year of this course is an opportunity to explore introductory social science theories and applications including elements of psychology, sociology, research methods and politics. Additionally you will develop generic academic skills such as writing reports, presenting and study skills. Student spotlights

This course draws on insights from several disciplines, including sociology, social policy as well as international development and criminology. You’ll be free to explore which issues or ideas in social science you find most interesting. You’ll study these from diverse perspectives and link them with relevant research skills. You’ll be supported in tailor-making your degree according to your interests. Typically, we would be looking for you to have studied units worth at least 120 credits, including at least 30 credits at Level 2. We would generally be looking for you to have taken relevant units in essay-based subjects, preferably social sciences.

Social science qualifications provide an excellent foundation for a wide variety of careers. Popular career choices include business, politics, human resources, the civil and diplomatic services and the public sector. A wide range of well-paid and socially responsible careers are open to social science students. Some roles use skills and approaches learned in all social science disciplines.
